The Dr Wael AlMahmeed CVCT-LMIC (WAC-LMIC) fellowship program

Educating a new generation of LMIC investigators

in the Cardio-Kidney-Metabolism field

  • The contribution of Low- and Medium-Income Countries (LMICs) to high standard health knowledge and actionable data is an important unmet need.

  • Healthcare in LMICs cannot be driven by the simple transposition of evidence and health data collected in high income and/or Northern/Western countries.

  • The adoption of guideline-directed evidence-based medical therapy remains suboptimal in LMICs, and mortality rates for the same diseases is much higher than in western countries

  • Health policy and clinical practice in these countries should improve to be more data-driven and more evidence-based as to offer better and more cost-effective health care to the patients in the Region.

  • Increasing the contribution of local investigators and health care professionals to the global evidence generation enterprise is an important priority for all health care professionals and policy makers in these countries.

  • Sooner or later the industry will have to pay attention to the development of clinical trials in regions largely under-represented in the clinical trials global enterprise.

The need to bolster clinical trial experience among CV fellows and junior faculty in LMICs is ever-increasing, and yet options to pursue rigorous training and solid experience in clinical trials are limited. To this end, the Cardiovascular Clinical Trials (CVCT) Forum is committed to promoting the young leaders of the future in clinical trial research, in LMICs.

The Dr Wael AlMahmeed CVCT-LMIC (WAC-LMIC) fellowship program aims at educating a new generation of LMIC investigators in the Cardio-Kidney-Metabolism field.

The distinct features of this program are allowing fellows to :

  1. Attend the annual Forum scientific sessions, with registration fees waived, and travel and accommodation expenses covered

  2. Participate as a Panelist-faculty member at the CVCT annual Forum scientific sessions

  3. Learn at “master classes” organized at each annual Forum by leaders in clinical trial methodology and statistics

  4. Speed-date and meet one-to-one with world class clinical trialists, at the CVCT-Career Escalator program

  5. Apply to the CVCT Future Trialists Fellowship program

  6. Network with critical trials’ stakeholders (academy, industry R&D, regulatory, journal editors, patient advocates)

  7. Lead CVCT publications. Fellows are paired with senior mentors to construct an enduring document summarizing a focused topic discussed at CVCT. These CVCT manuscripts aim to challenge the current concepts and point towards future directions of research.

  8. The program is monitored through face-to-face or teleconference meetings.
